AFT, spiritual leader at Adat Reyim Synagogue since 1991; graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Philadelphia; worked with the March of the Living since 1992, B'nai Brith Youth Organization since 1985, and is on the Jewish Federation's Rabbinic Cabinet; past president of the George Mason University Community Hillel Board and of the Board of Jewish Education of Greater Washington; chaired the Board of Operation Understanding, D.C., a Black/Jewish dialogue; currently involved in developing teen dialogue groups through George Mason University's Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution.
MICHAEL G. ANDERSON, BA, University of Illinois; MA and PhD, University of Chicago; Adjunct Professor at NVCC Alexandria Campus and George Mason University; retired from the Foreign Service with the State Department; conducted two courses for LLI: "The 20th Century World" and "Life in the Foreign Service."
DORIS BALINSKY, originally from South Africa; moved to the U.S. 1975; PhD in Biochemistry, London University, England; carried out basic research related to human diseases and served as a Scientist Administrator at the US Department of Agriculture and at the National Institutes of Health; Docent at the National Museum of African Art, and has led LLI tours there; loves nature, and leads wildflower walks for LLI in the spring.
KELLY CAMPBELL, graduate, University of Maryland; Certified Financial Planner; Chartered Financial Consultant; Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor; Certified Senior Advisor; Principal of Campbell Wealth Management, an independent Northern Virginia based firm; appeared in ABA Journal, the Lawyers Magazine, and the Journal of Accountancy.
DARRELL COCHRAN, a Civil War living historian for 26 years; is a founding member and currently the President of the Third U.S. Regular Infantry Reenactors, Inc.; has written articles on Civil War History for numerous publications.
Dr. ELIZABETH CROWELL, BA, Anthropology, Rhode Island College; MA (History), College of William and Mary; MA and PhD in Historical Archaeology, University of Pennsylvania; Manager of the Cultural Resource Management and Protection Section, Fairfax County Park Authority; has more than 20 years of experience working as an archaeological consultant.
WILLIAM DEARY, BA, Manhattan College; MA and PhD, George Washington University; retired from the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research; taught various classes for OLLI at George Mason.
DAN DENNISON, researches, collects and restores photography using digital restoration software; helps individuals and organizations repair and authentically print photographs from a variety of vintage media; collects photography of the 1890-1930 era including period images of the Washington, DC area; speaks to local groups about preserving family and historical photographs.
GLENN DOWNING, MA, University of Michigan where his Masters thesis was on Railroad Passenger Operations; joined Norfolk and Western Railway just out of college; spent 30 years with a firm specializing in railroad operations and economics and started a small railroad in Illinois; enjoys real and model railroads of all sizes; worked on an archeological dig in Galilee for the University of South Florida (USF); is a member of the Jesus Seminar; studied the subject of Jesus at the USF, Oxford and the University of North Carolina; has been on seven programs dealing with archeology and Jesus on Reston cable TV.

ELLEN KAMILAKIS, has worked as the Public Information Officer with the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management since August 2006; previously worked for the Fairfax County Police Department as Volunteer Coordinator for the Animal Services Division where she created and managed the current volunteer program; served as a Police Information Technician for the Helicopter Division and the McLean District Station; was the layout designer for the Chief 's newsletter "Behind the Badge."
DIANNE K. QUEBRAL, MS, MBS, University of Maryland; Medical Reserve Corps Program Coordinator in the Office of Emergency Preparedness; has a background in community organizing and legislative advocacy, most recently representing children 's hospitals and related medical institutions on various issues affecting children and their health care. |
GRANT FULKERSON, retired from the Navy after a 30-year career in Navy surface ships; has combined his love of the sea and lighthouses with a life-long stamp collecting hobby, to specializing in collecting lighthouse stamps and other lighthouse-related philatelic items; is a member of the Lighthouse Collectors Society.
BURT GREENSTEIN, Bachelor and Master degrees, University of Buffalo; majors in History, Geography and Languages; taught English History and European Governments; worked in the Department of the Air Force and the Defense Intelligence Agency.
WILLIAM HUDSON, Bachelor of Music, Philadelphia Conservatory of Music; BA, University of Pennsylvania; Master of Music, Yale University; with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra for over 35 years; conducted performances at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap and the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival.
DONALD IGO, AB in Economics, Harvard College; MA in Economics, American University; retired, Assistant for Energy Policy in the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation; conducted courses in Economics and Energy at both the George Mason University OLLI and the Arlington LRI.
DOUG JOHNSON, a member of the LLI Board of Directors, coordinates the Arts & Smarts Special Interest Group and loves to travel.
KAREN KENTON, a programming development executive in WETA's National Programming Department since 1996; project manager on all the WETA co-productions with Ken Burns and Florentine Films where she assists in preparing films for broadcasting and manages the teams who are charged with the promotion and distribution of the programs, as well as the development of outreach materials.
CANDY LEIBUNDGUTH, BA, Music, Douglass College of Rutgers University; former music teacher and singer; with Education Dept. of Virginia Opera since 1993; wrote the original children 's opera program "Freedom's Journey," "The New Adventures of Alice in Opera Land," "The Highlights of Porgy and Bess," and "I Hear America Singing;" developed Virginia Opera's Adopt-a-School Program; has produced numerous teacher resource materials and study guides.
MARY LIPSEY, BA in History and Sociology;, MA in Education; retired seventh grade American History teacher; co-author of Braddock's True Gold; Braddock District Representative to Fairfax County History Commission; avid interest in first ladies and local history.
JAMES LITCHKO, Certified Anti-terrorist Specialist; Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University; former government safety officer; a member of the National Speakers' Association, the National Association of Chiefs of Police and the FBI's InfraGard organization; author of four security and I.C.E. books; and has been interviewed on Fox News Radio and Homeland Security TV.com.
SHIRLEY LOTZ, BA in History/English, Wellesley College; MA in Education/History, George Washington University; briefly served as a junior high school English/History teacher; retired from the Defense Department as a Program Manager for automating civilian personnel operations.
EDWARD MARK, a retired Federal Government Public Utilities Attorney; makes and sells baskets, specializing in Nantucket baskets; regularly teaches an LLI basket class.
LIDDELL McLEOD, BA and MA in French Literature; studied Shakespeare with teachers who treasured the beauty of his language and layered insights into human nature; serves on LLI's Board of Directors; produced LLI's newsletter for several years.
MARIANNE MOERMAN, MA, University of Edinburgh, Scotland; MLS from UCLA; volunteers as an usher at the Shakespeare Theatre and several other theaters in the area.

JENNIFER EPSTEIN and MICHAEL KELLY have directed their mutual love of history and education toward college courses of study as well as careers with the National Park Service. In addition to interpreting the National Mall 's notable cultural resources, Ranger Epstein spearheads the park's extensive education and outreach programs, while Ranger Kelly manages several park editing, publication and signage projects. Prior to Washington, D.C., Rangers Epstein and Kelly worked at several National Park Service sites. Ranger Epstein worked at the Adams National Historic Site, Colonial National Historical Park, Gettysburg National Military Park, and the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Ranger Kelly served at the Eisenhower National Historic Site and Gettysburg National Military Park. |

Bar Associations' Trust and Estates Sections and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys; serves as court appointed Guardian/Conservator for incapacitated individuals and as Trustee for Special Needs Trusts; has appeared on local TV and before community groups throughout Northern Virginia discussing legal problems of the elderly.

RICHARD RISK, graduate, University of Missouri; retired, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; founding member of LLI; has taught a variety of LLI courses.
MARJORIE RUNGE, BA in English, Beloit College; Masters in Library Science, University of Illinois;.a retired librarian who has taught many Marymount University students how to use computer databases to find books and articles for their research projects.
JOHN RYBICKI, BS, Clarkson College of Technology; MA, University of Arkansas; MS, George Washington University; diplomas in Theological Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary and the Antiochian Orthodox Church; studied at St. George's College, Jerusalem; received a Masters of Theology from St. John of Damascus School of Theology, Balamand University; lectured at the Benedictine Pastoral Center, OLLI at George Mason University, LLI at NVCC, the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia and in local churches; retired as a Systems Engineer from the Missile Defense Agency; and serves as Pastoral Associate at the Riverwood Erickson Retirement Community in Maryland.
ARLINE SACHS, BS, Mathematics, University of Illinois; Masters in Computer and Information Systems, American University; retired Assoc. Professor at NVCC where she taught computer classes for 22 years; avid genealogist, which led her to write a recently-published book about her great-great-grandfather.
DOROTHY SCHOENEMAN, the 50+ recruiter for the Peace Corps Mid-Atlantic Regional Office; served as a volunteer in Mali, West Africa, where she taught health and sanitation at the elementary school and worked with women to improve nutrition; worked in Arlington County as an interim and substitute teacher.
LOUISE SOUSK, retired public school teacher; contributing member of LLI since the steering committee formed; served on the board for four years; since 1998, has planned and led day and overnight trips for LLI members; organized a Charter Elderhostel for LLI; regularly teaches an LLI basket class.
CARL STEINER, PhD, Professor Emeritus, George Washington University; pursues studies in many areas of knowledge and gives lectures on his findings.
GENEVIEVE THIEM, BS in Nursing, St. Joseph College, West Hartford, Conn.; worked as a Maternal & Child Health nurse and a Public Health nurse; began knitting as a child and has been teaching knitting for many years.
KEITH TOMLINSON, Manager, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens; Fellow, Biological Sciences, Washington D.C. Academy of Sciences; previously, Education Specialist in Natural Science at Bishop Museum, Honolulu; studied botanical gardens in the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Pacific; wrote several popular and technical articles dealing with conservation, environmental education and plant diversity; worked as a Natural Science Consultant on several books, including the Smithsonian Institution 's Guide to Natural America; Study Tour Leader, Natural History, Smithsonian Associates.
