In 1999 LLI established a Student Scholarship Program at the Northern Virginia Community College-Annandale Campus to give much needed financial help to outstanding students. This is in appreciation and recognition of the support provided by the college to LLI, as well as an opportunity to support a most worthy cause. Generous donations from our members have made it possible to increase our total scholarship awards from $1,000 to $9,000, and to increase the numbers of scholarships awarded from one to six per year.
We offer two types of scholarships, both of which are intended to be used by the recipients to pay for tuition and books as they continue their studies. The Leadership Scholarships are given to outstanding student leaders in recognition of their contributions in fostering unity among a diverse multicultural student body and in providing volunteer community service. The winners must show clear performance as leaders as well as scholastic achievement. The Academic Scholarships are awarded to students demonstrating both academic merit and financial need. The names of past winners of the Knox Singleton Leadership scholarship are engraved on a plaque that hangs outside the Provostís conference room in the CG building on the Annandale campus.
In 2009 we offered and awarded six scholarships totaling $9,000. The $2,000 Knox Singleton Leadership scholarship was awarded to Esther Clark, while Monica Gibson was awarded the $1,000 Leadership Scholarship. Four Academic Scholarships were awarded. Liduina Ngundam and Youssef Zaki were awarded $2,000 scholarships, while Jason Upchurch and Jonas Shellenberger each received $1,000 scholarships. All these students had outstanding academic records, and Esther and Liduina demonstrated most impressive leadership skills as well. LLI is pleased to be able to help these fine young people pursue their academic goals.
